Welcome to Tahoe Deep!

My name is Chase Petley, and I am seeking your support in the endeavors of the project, "Tahoe Deep". I have been working on this project for almost a year now, and I am excited to see its progress, but have a lot yet to accomplish.

What is "Tahoe Deep"?

Tahoe Deep is the name of the project as a whole, in which I will be lowering a submersible exoskeleton to the bottom of Lake Tahoe, which is North America's second deepest lake. The submersible will need to withstand the crushing force of over 1,600 feet of water, and over 740 pounds per square inch.

Why Lake Tahoe?

First and foremost: nobody has ever been to the bottom of Lake Tahoe, let alone recorded the bottom of it. The estimated depth of Lake Tahoe is 1645 feet, and there are many rumors as to what may be at the bottom of it. Some common myths as to what may be at the bottom of the lake are that of a cryrptozoological creature rumored to have been seen, nicknamed the 'Tahoe Tessie', as well as famous mobster's mass burials in the lake itself of those killed.

Not only would Tahoe Deep be able to prove or disprove the myths surrounding Lake Tahoe, but it would also give a more accurate depth of the Lake's floor.

Be one of the first to see!

This is a short video we made of our last expedition I've been holding on to the video because i wanted to get more footage before I showed everyone but I am anxious, so here it is.

When you watch this look at the pageviews... add 20 to it.

20 people have seen this video before I posted it to this blog... Its the first video of the bottom of Lake Tahoe. For example if page views are at 12 you are the 32nd person to see the bottom of Tahoe.

The video was created by Steve Martinez, a brilliant photographer and all around artist of multiple platforms.

Working for the man.

Last month I had a meeting with El Dorado Sheriffs department's Dive team ( in my opinion the best law enforcement divers in the world ) and we spoke of a massive hole in the diving industry regarding affordable rigid, quality dive cameras on the market. I showed them a camera core and light housing from Tahoe Deep and they loved it, they have agreed to do testing for me and let me use all the info and footage towards my development of the new "Tahoe Deep"  dive camera.

At the moment this is what is available on the market:

  • Economical underwater camera system designed for boat deployment
  • Sharp picture-high resolution B&W camera 0.5 lux low light
  • Large viewing area-wide viewing angle
  • 2 bright 100 watt lights
  • Compact system for rapid deployment
  • Avoid time consuming dives on false targets
  • Hand held or lowered from boat
  • Corrosion-proof PVC housing with built in leak detection system
  • Depth Rating: 250 Foot
  • 150 Foot Cable included
  • Upgrade to 250 Foot Cable and Commercial grade high resolution 0.7 lux low light B&W camera
 Price: 3200.00

The Tahoe Deep dive model (not yet named)
·                     Boat deployment
·                     4K video resolution and FPS up to 240fps (slow motion)
·                     Wide or narrow viewing angles
·                     One high output LED light; far brighter than any 100-Watt light bulb
·                     Depending on accessories, this is the smallest dive camera compared to other dive cameras that have not even half the abilities of the new design. (a base model will fit in a big mac box)
·                     Hand-held or lowered
·                     6061 Aluminium and Polycarbonate ( bullet proof glass ) guaranteed to never leak
·                     Depth rating: 1000ft
·                     No cable included (but include wireless technology even on the base model)
·                     Upgradable to reach the deepest point on planet earth in the worse conditions (depths only a handful of humans beings have been able to see in history)

Price: I want this extreme camera to cost merely a passion for exploration and a thirst for discovery. With only this camera, a boat, and several thousand feet of line you can explore parts of the world NO ONE has ever seen before; places that have recently cost corporations and scientists millions a day to explore... (98 million is the cheapest you will get to this camera)

I AIM to sell this camera for under $2500.00 because I’m more curious in what people will see with it rather than trying to become a millionaire overnight.

Any questions should be directed to chase_petley@hotmail.com

Its in the water!

Since the last post in November Tahoe Deep has been tested two times. The first test was a partial test and the a Camera and light housing were sent to 550feet, it was successful and the equipment preformed flawlessly. Recently we went back to Lake Tahoe and on the second test run we hit the bottom at around 1650 feet. We believe these are some of the first images of the bottom of lake Tahoe!
On the right you can see a transparent shrimp that decided to come up to the camera and check it out.

Ready to go!

All the parts have came in from Airpoint and we have a fully built submersible ready to go to the bottom of Lake Tahoe. Airpoint did an amazing job and I could go on and on about it but here are some pictures, their work speaks for it's self.

Tonight we will be modifying a down rigger to be more compatible with our project.  Fully configured "Tahoe Deep" only weighs 42.5 lbs ( less then a third of the maximum weight our down rigger can hold ) but with all the time and money invested in "Tahoe Deep" a 1/3 safety factor in the unknown and extreme conditions of the bottom of Lake Tahoe wont cut it.

Our goal is to do the first test of "Tahoe Deep" this upcoming week as long as we can procure a boat and a driver.  So stay posted I will update this blog every day till you are watching footage from the bottom of Lake Tahoe!!

Tuf-Line

A big thanks to Tuf-Line for donating the 150lbs test braided line we will need to get Tahoe Deep to the deepest parts of Lake Tahoe! Tuf-Line was not the only braided line manufacturer to offer to be our newest sponsor but after some research we determined Tuf-Line makes the best product and it is made in the USA to boot! We look forward to show the world that Tuf-Line products can real in more then a fish.

This is one of the last pieces we needed to send  "Tahoe Deep"  down to the Lake's floor. Expect more posts, I'll keep updating our progress and if all goes as planned look forward to seeing the footage from Tahoe Deep shortly!

Old friends helping to get the word out!

Yosemite Bear Vasquez, one of the biggest names when it comes to Youtube has shared interest in "Tahoe Deep". You might remember Bear as "The Double Rainbow Guy". He has done everything from being a viral Youtube superstar, to starring in a Windows TV add. I met Bear a while ago, went to his Mountain Farm just outside Yosemite National Park to get to know him and help him out around his property with some trees (I used to be an arborist and that is me behind him in the photo). Tonight Bear and I talked about "Tahoe Deep", and he decided to post a link to this page on his Twitter! He seems to be as interested in the secrets of Tahoe as we are! So a big thanks to Bear for helping spread the word about "Tahoe Deep"

Bear's twitter is @Yosemitebear62, so follow him on Twitter and re-tweet the post to help us get Tahoe Deep seen by as many eyes as we can! We talked about the lakes Mono and Tenaya as well, two lakes located near the Yosemite National park. After we have shown the world the bottom of Tahoe, a trip up to visit Bear and explore the two very interesting lakes is in order! If you’re wondering, Tahoe Deep's job is not over at Lake Tahoe! Expect footage from unexplored Lakes near and far!
Tonight we will be sending out sponsorship proposals to a list of braided monofilament line manufacturers. We are asking for 1000 meters of 100lbs+ test BML. to be donated to Tahoe deep to be used on it's maiden voyage so stay tuned as we expect to name our newest sponsor later this week.
There are many reasons we picket a braided monofilament line over aviation cable and single strand monofilament line here are a few:

Our mission is to send a 50lbs submersible exoskeleton at least 1645 feet deep, its going to have to withstand not only the weight of the submersible but the extra stress of possible snags and drag. Braided monofilament line can be purchased in bulk lengths where aviation cable and monofilament seems hard to procure a length of material that will withstand the standards we need to meet.

Our new sponsor will be added to our sponsors at the bottom of this page and included on our official "Tahoe Deep" T-shirts.
